Recipe Corner

The Humble
Sheperd Pie

Ingredients:

  • cooking spray
  • 1 1/2 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1 1/2-inch thick slices
  • 6 tablespoons butter, cut into pieces
  • 1 cup milk
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 (1 ounce) packages instant chicken gravy mix
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 (16 ounce) package frozen peas and carrots, thawed
  • 2 cups shredded cheese of choice

Directions:

  • Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Lightly grease a medium baking dish.
  • Cover potatoes with water in a saucepan and boil for 20 to 30 minutes, or until fork-tender. Drain and beat until smooth with an electric mixer. Add butter, milk, and salt and pepper to taste; beat to desired consistency.
  • Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. Cook and stir turkey and onion until turkey is fully cooked. Add gravy mix and water; stir often, until gravy is thick and bubbly. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Add turkey mixture to the baking dish. Next, layer the peas and carrots, and top with the mashed potatoes. Top with a layer of shredded cheese.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until cheese is melted and the potatoes are golden on the top.

Fire Safety

Auston Chase recently had the Hardeeville Fire Department visit our community for a class in fire safety.

We want to share some very helpful information

  • Fire needs 3 things to “live”, heat, oxygen, and food. The food could be grease, oil, carpet, or almost anything. If you take away the oxygen the fire can’t live.
  • If you have a kitchen fire, baking soda works well to put it out. Even just putting a pot lid over it will smother it out.
  • Never pour water on a grease fire, it will splatter the grease up the wall and now your cabinets are on fire too!
  • The fire extinguishers in the white cabinets in the breezeways are ABC rated which means that they are good for just about any fire.
  • By far the first and most important thing to do if you have a fire is CALL 911!

Maintenance Tip

What do you think is the most used appliance in your kitchen? Some of you will say the stove/oven, some will say the microwave, others the dishwasher. However, the most used appliance in the kitchen is the refrigerator.

Think about it, it comes on by itself during the day when you are not home, when you open it for the 8th time in 15 minutes, when you’re grabbing the ice cream at 11:30 at night, and while you are fast asleep. So, its only good common sense to do a couple things to make sure it runs a good long time.

  • You use much more energy and make the fridge work much harder when you put it on the coldest setting, it is really only necessary to put the temperature on between 4 and 6. This will lengthen the life of your fridge and lower your electric bill.
  • Try to open the door as little as possible.
  • Don’t put HOT foods in the fridge, this will raise the temperature in your chill chest and could make ice form on your fan, making an irritating clicking noise. Let food cool first before putting them in the refrigerator or freezer.
  • Clean the gasket around the door. Doing this give you a good seal.
  • Make sure your fridge stays fairly clean, this will make your fridge more efficient and will lower your energy costs and increase the lifespan of your machine.

While breakdowns do happen, these few tips will make sure that the “guardian of the milk” and “keeper of the sandwich fixings” will stay on duty longer!
