Auston Chase Apartments June 2014 Newsletter

June 15th
Auston Chase wishes every Father and Grandfather
a wonderful Father’s Day!

Glass Bottles and Containers, and why we do not want them at the pool

Let’s think about it, if a glass bottle breaks, we must close the pool, have it drained, cleaned, and of course fill it back up again. This means no one will be allowed in the pool area during this process.

Also, I’m sure you all know that it is dangerous to have broken glass in an area where people are barefoot. So please do not bring any type of glass bottle or container to the pool area.

Health & Wellness Corner

Fiber: Your Secret Fat Fighter!

Fiber offers a multitude of slimming features – it effectively “fills” your stomach up while providing little to no calories!

First, fiber will ultimately stay in your stomach for a longer period of time, which means you will feel satisfied longer.

Second, because fiber hinders digestion, it will naturally soften the peaks and valleys of blood glucose fluctuations than can incite your “inner cookie monster”. It releases appetite-suppressing hormones from the gastrointestinal tract.

So an apple a day does more than keep the doctor away!

Recipe Corner

Baby Tomato and Fresh Goat Cheese Salad

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups baby tomatoes
  • 1 cup (about 8 ounces) fresh goat cheese
  • 1 teaspoon chopped chives
  • 1 teaspoon chopped basil
  • 1 teaspoon chopped oregano
  • 1 teaspoon chopped thyme
  • 1 cup unseasoned fresh bread crumbs
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons each hazelnut, walnut, and olive oils, or any combination equal to 6 tablespoons
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 12 sprigs chervil or flat- leaf parsley

Procedure:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Cut the tomatoes in half horizontally.
  3. Mix the goat cheese with the herbs and shape the mixture into four 2- inch cakes and chill them for 30 minutes or so. Season the bread crumbs with salt and pepper to taste. Beat the egg with a pinch of salt. Carefully dip the goat cheese cakes into the egg, then into the bread crumbs to coat lightly. Place the cakes on a buttered cookie sheet and bake them until golden brown, about 8 minutes, or brown them in an oiled heavy skillet over medium- high heat. Whisk together the oils and lemon juice and toss with the tomatoes. Season with salt and pepper. Arrange the dressed tomatoes on a serving platter. Place the baked goat cheese cakes on the tomatoes, garnish with the chervil, and serve.

Turtles and Gators and Frogs, Oh My…

The weather has warmed up and it’s time for wildlife to venture out.

Here are a few hints regarding our wildlife

ALLIGATORS

  • Alligators are protected under S.C. Regulation 123-151.
  • They eat fish, turtles, and other small animals. Large alligators occasionally catch larger animals such as raccoons, deer and dogs.
  • It is unlawful to feed alligators; this includes throwing fish or fish parts into the water.
  • Do not approach alligators no matter how big or small. Alligators can move fast!
  • Keep pets on a leash and away from the water.
  • Do not allow children to throw toys or rocks into the water. To an alligator, a splash means food.

FROGS

  • Frogs and toads are harmless. At least most of them are, so please leave them where they are. And most importantly, do not take them out of their natural habitat.

TURTLES

  • Turtles are migratory animals. If you see a turtle crossing the road please move it out of the road, but in the same direction it was heading.
  • Do not pick them up by their tails, it hurts!
  • Remember they have sharp claws and teeth.
  • Try to carry them by the back of their shell.

*Please remember that taking a wild animal out of its environment is extremely stressful and unfair to the animal. They have natural instincts that you will destroy when placing them in captivity. Keep Wildlife Wild!
